On Friday February 1st the Georgia Bulldawgs' most celebrated alum graced the downtown Athens community with the grand opening of a remarkable new eatery. Heisman winner and college football hall-of-famer Herschel Walker generated a huge amount of buzz on the college campus when word started to spread that he would be opening a pub right in the heart of bulldawg nation.

Herschel's Famous 34 Pub and Grill is a fabulous new restaurant to add to your "restaurants to try" list. The menu celebrates the famous number 34 by offering 34 different variations of brews and 34 delcious flavor options for wings. Among the wings and beer are a number of different American cuisine favorites such as grilled cheese sandwiches, seafood, burgers, steak and much more.

Where to Shop Downtown in Athens

The downtown scene in Athens is incredibly eclectic. It is the ultimate destination for shopping and hanging out. I find myself enjoying these pastimes on a weekly basis, however, if you aren't familar with the area, you can become overwhelmed by the large array of shops awaiting you. Consider me your personal shopping tour guide. This article will highlight the best of the fashionable amenities Georgia's flagship institution has to offer you downtown.

Best Places to Watch the Game

If you weren’t lucky enough to get a ticket to watch the bulldogs play in Sanford stadium, then don’t fret, there are still some great places in town to watch Georgia dominate.

Magnolias- If you like to sit back and have a nice beer while you watch the game, then the upstairs bar of Magnolias is one of the best places for you. Centrally located downtown, Magnolia’s serves the perfect drinks for a hot game day.

Blind Pig Tavern- Blind pig tavern has two locations that are both great game day venues. They have an all American meal that is sure to appeal to all football lovers. The taverns have ten televisions each so that the big game is viewable from every corner of the restaurant.

Mellow Mushroom- Mellow Mushroom is one of the best pizza places in Athens. They have everything from exotic jerk chicken calzones to plain cheese pizza. On game days all of the televisions are tuned in to the bulldogs game and plenty of fans file in to watch.

Tate Student Center- If you want to be close to the action, the Tate Student Center is right across the street from the stadium. The Tate movie theatre plays every game. Watching the game in Tate is the next best thing to actually being in the stadium. You can hear the whole game directly from Sanford.

Boar’s Head- Boar’s Head is both a bar and a restaurant. They have televisions inside and outside on the deck providing variety for anyone who wishes to watch the game. They also have an assortment of drink specials every game day.
