Big Dogs on the River

Written by Jeremy Markel

Big Dogs on the River is a rafting and outdoor activity company that is located on the Middle Oconee River in Athens, GA.  The section of the river through which people raft is 3.5 miles long and takes approximately 2-3 hours to travel.  This stretch of the river is mild but has a few bumps along the way.  Kayakers mostly enjoy the Tallassee Shoals at Mitchell Bridge.

Relax Outdoors at Dudley Park

Written by Jeremy

Dudley Park is a beautiful, lush, 12-acre park that is located on the east side of Athens and directly behind Mama’s Boy.  In it one will find picnic tables, grills, trails, cement paths, the North Oconee River, open fields, and Athens’ history.  Dudley Park also hosts local events.

At the park’s front are picnic tables, a grill, and an open grassy area.  Here many people gather in order to have picnics or cookouts where they grill burgers, hot dogs, and other food.  They also play Frisbee, catch, and other games.  All around one part of the area are many trees, which offer a beautiful landscape and shade from the sun.

There are many dirt trails that travel through the park.  These are fun for observing the lush scenery, and walking, jogging, and biking.

The cement paths encircle the park and some of them travel along the North Oconee River and are shaded by the wilderness.  Many walkers, joggers, bikers, rollerbladers, and families travel along these paths.  The river adds to the park’s serene, tranquil atmosphere and offers recreation for people who like to fish.  However, wading or playing in the creek of any kind is not recommended due to poor water quality.

The Grill

Written by Jeremy

The Grill is a 24-hour, 1950’s style, diner with a quaint and old-fashioned atmosphere.  The restaurant has many tables and booths to which friendly waiters and waitresses tend.  The jukebox plays classic music from the 50’s and 60’s.  On the menu is a diverse selection of food items: hamburgers, chicken, turkey, bar-b-cue, a kid’s menu, desserts, soft drinks, vegetarian and vegan dishes, and breakfast items.

The Grill is the only 24-hour restaurant that is located in Athens.  Its atmosphere is reminiscent of 1950’s diners due to its color scheme, jukebox, bar stools, and even minute details like the ketchup containers and neon sign.  In between the restaurant’s seating sections is a glass case that displays old comic books, action figures, soda bottles, and some newer artifacts like a doll of “Chef” from South Park.

The Grill has a great location in the heart of downtown Athens and is conveniently located on the same street as many of Athens’ most popular bars such as; Silver Dollar Bar, SandBar, City Bar, Hotel Indigo, Walker’s Pub, and Blue Sky Bar.
