Relax Outdoors at Dudley Park

Dudley Park is a beautiful, lush, 12-acre park that is located on the east side of Athens and directly behind Mama’s Boy.  In it one will find picnic tables, grills, trails, cement paths, the North Oconee River, open fields, and Athens’ history.  Dudley Park also hosts local events.

At the park’s front are picnic tables, a grill, and an open grassy area.  Here many people gather in order to have picnics or cookouts where they grill burgers, hot dogs, and other food.  They also play Frisbee, catch, and other games.  All around one part of the area are many trees, which offer a beautiful landscape and shade from the sun.

There are many dirt trails that travel through the park.  These are fun for observing the lush scenery, and walking, jogging, and biking.

The cement paths encircle the park and some of them travel along the North Oconee River and are shaded by the wilderness.  Many walkers, joggers, bikers, rollerbladers, and families travel along these paths.  The river adds to the park’s serene, tranquil atmosphere and offers recreation for people who like to fish.  However, wading or playing in the creek of any kind is not recommended due to poor water quality.

At the grassy open fields families and friends can engage in numerous activities: soccer, baseball, football, Frisbee, Ultimate Frisbee, croquet or more relaxing activities like picnics, sunbathing, and reading books.

Along these trails one will find information about Athens’ history.  At these miniature “information centers” one will learn information such as; when cotton was Athens’ economic staple and how Athens’ economy transformed when other competing industries entered the market.

Eventually one will find a circular, stone formation with a star in the center.  If one stands in the star’s center, faces south, and begins speaking then his or her words will echo.  This is a fun and sort of bizarre activity in which to engage.

Parking is available on Poplar Street, Oak Street, and MLK at First Street.
